The Chantal Tea Kettle That Is, and The Tea Kettle That Was

So, one of the things I love the most in my kitchen is my red KitchenAid tea kettle.  Well, one of the things I did love the most.  You see, the tea kettle had a little incident a few nights ago.

I had settled in comfortably to watch a movie when I realized I really needed some of my Yogi Lemon Ginger tea (this does wonders for queasiness and indigestion!).  I jumped up, put some water to boil in my kettle, then sat back down to start the movie.  Little did I know I had made The Big Mistake.  That being that I left the whistling thingy up.

A few minutes after this, having completely forgotten about the tea kettle, I started smelling something strange.  I asked my husband if he had opened up the vents on our wood stove, which can make it get quite hot and emit a strange smell.  He answered in the negative, so I assumed it was just me.  Another minute after that and I knew I was smelling smoke.  I realized my mistake, leapt off the couch, and bolted to the kitchen where, to my horror, my beautiful red Kitchen Aid kettle was almost black from the heat and there was smoke pouring out from underneath it!

At least I had the presence of mind to turn off the burner.  However, I couldn’t get the kettle off.  I thought for a moment I might have broken both the kettle and the burner, but to my relief it detached easily after my husband poured some water on it.  The good thing was that the house did not catch on fire.  The bad thing was that my tea kettle was ruined.

So, what is a girl who loves her red kettle to do?  Well, dash out and buy another one of course!  Which is the whole point of my story.  I bought a beautiful, new Chantal tea kettle in red and now I’m thinking maybe the whole thing was Providence.

I absolutely love my new Chantal kettle.  I like it…  *shhh… close your ears, old kettle*  I like it even better than my Kitchen Aid one!  It has the cutest little lid, and the handle comes up higher and is easier to grab.  The whistling spout thingy is easier to open without burning your hand.  My mother, who is quite the cook, tells me that Chantal is pretty good stuff that will last for awhile.  I’ll take it!

What happened to the old kettle, you wonder?   My daughter is now its owner and it sits on her toy kitchen upstairs.  Unfortunately, that doesn’t prevent her brothers from coming in and breaking it, which has already happened once.

Orgreenic Review

A revolutionary new kind of cookware called Orgreenic has been touted as taking kitchens everywhere by storm.  Ogreenic promises healthier, easier cooking, but how does it perform under the pressure of everyday use and constant wear and tear?  We’ll discuss it here.

So what is Orgreenic exactly?  To be honest, at first I thought it was a line of organic vitamins or skin care or something.  Like Aveeno maybe.  Actually, it’s a range of pans that has a unique ceramic non-stick coating.  So basically instead of the nasty, toxic Teflon surface, you have an all-natural, safe to use ceramic surface.  Sounds okay to me!

Of course, As Seen on TV commercials can sometimes be a little misleading, to say the least.  I decided to look into this further.  I mean, I had heard about how traditional nonstick cookware emits all kinds of toxins and chemicals when heated, but what have the alternatives been?  I was interested to find out if this new stuff is actually worth its salt.

What I Learned about Orgreenic

Well, before I share what I learned about Orgreenic, let me tell you what I found out about the old stuff we’ve all been using.

First, the old school nonstick pans have PFOA in them, which is a known carcinogen.  A little cancer with your egg this morning?  I don’t think so.  Goodbye, Teflon pans!  Orgreenic or not, I’ll be looking for something else.

Second, did you know that your convenient nonstick coating is actually chipping and flaking when you use it, even if it’s too small to see?  So when you think you’ve whipped up a healthy stir fry with minimal oil in it (thanks to that evil nonstick coating), you’re actually eating pieces of the chemical-laden surface itself!  That’s right!

Third, I discovered that nonstick pans may be banned in the future due to concerns about their questionable “health” benefits.  Having your egg slide around the pan without any grease may be convenient, but it’s just not worth filling your body with little particles that are known to cause cancer.

The Good News

So, here’s the upside of what I discovered.  First of all, Orgreenic’s nonstick coating is good, old-fashioned ceramic material.  People have been using clay and ceramic pottery since…  Well, since they discovered they could dry some mud in a fire!  No carcinogens, no PFOA, no nasty chemicals leaking into your food.

I also found out that Orgreenic guarantees NO chipping or flaking.  Although I’m sure the ceramic coating would be better for you than Teflon if you swallow a piece of it, you don’t have to worry about it.  It absolutely will not flake into your food.

Another good thing is that Orgreenic is going to be around for a long time to come.  There aren’t any questions about its effects on your health, and this technology is just coming forward!   So go ahead and cook that egg without any added grease.  You can daydream about the weight you’re losing while you watch it slide around effortlessly.

What’s the Catch?

I know, I know.  This sounds too much like a sales pitch.  Unfortunately, I have the tendency to “pitch” products that I appreciate to all of my friends, family, and readers.  Well, just so you know I’m honest, it’s not all as paradisiacal as the As Seen On TV commercial makes it appear.

First, the obvious.  No, purchasing Orgreenic won’t give you a beautiful kitchen in which you whip out your squeaky clean pan and sauté your perfect, precut vegetables that you have in tiny glass bowls on your counter.  It won’t change your life or make you a model.  It won’t make your old, black and white, frustrating cooking experience suddenly become a Technicolor dream of perfect omelets and leisurely mornings.  If you’re considering Orgreenic for these reasons, stop watching infomercials and live your life!

Just like your current pans, Orgreenic won’t be radiantly beautiful for the rest of your life.  If you use it, it will look used.  It does come with detailed care instructions to help maintain that “new” look, but even so, you can expect a bit of wear and tear.

Second, seasoning the pans appears to be a bit tricky.  Seasoning? You ask.  If you think this involves sprinkling a little oregano or chili pepper on your pan before cooking, you need to get a basic cookbook.  I’m talking about a process in which you heat your pan with a little oil in it to help that nonstick coating keep its nonstick-iness.  This is common for all ceramic bakeware or stoneware, so it makes since that this is a necessity.  All I can say here is FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.  ‘Nuff said.

Even so…

Despite the fact that Orgreenic won’t turn me into a perfect infomercial yuppie and that I need to pay attention to instructions when seasoning the pans, I actually think I’ve found a product that I can recommend.

When doing research I found review after review by happy users who have had their Orgreenic pans for months and are still thrilled with them.  That, to me, says it all.  When consumers are consistently happy with a product, I think it’s something worth looking at.

Orgreenic is healthy, easy to use, easy to maintain, will help you lose weight (if you stir fry those veggies sans oil and not hit up your local McDonald’s afterwards) and it may even help you enjoy cooking for your family just a bit more.  If you’re still skeptical, read the reviews by those who’ve used it.  I did, and I’m glad I chose Orgreenic.
